Q:

How many people die in the UK each year?

A:

In 2008, the estimated number of deaths in the UK was 553,000. The year in which the largest number of deaths were recorded was 1918 when 715,200 people died. This was as a result of the influenza pandemic that followed the end of the First World War.

Q:

How do I stop direct mail arriving after a loved one's death?

A:

The Bereavement Register was set up in 2000 to help reduce the amount of direct mail that is sent to people who have died. Companies and other organisations involved in direct marketing regularly update their data bases against the details contained within the Bereavement Register. At the beginning of 2005, 75% of companies and organisations involved in this form of marketing subscribed to the Bereavement register. The Bereavement Register web-site is www.thebereavementregister.org.uk
